Statement of Intent
In this collection, I aim to capture the vibrant spirit of Mumbai's people amidst the overwhelming density, where personal space and privacy are unattainable luxuries for most. My objective is to reflect their resilience and diversity: from youngsters playing cricket beneath skyscrapers to the maze of Dharavi slum, housing a million people in under one square mile. Amidst the chaos, there is a surprising sense of comfort and harmony. By documenting the devotion at the Trishul festival, where worshippers pierce their bodies in honour of Mariamman Devi, and fishermen returning from the Arabian Sea, I highlight how tradition and modernity coexist. The direct gazes of people staring into the camera create an intimate, perhaps unsettling connection, mirroring the lack of privacy in their lives. I seek to portray Mumbai as a city that overwhelms yet fascinates, where every moment tells a story of the human spirit. (146 words)
