The River that Changed the World

The River Mersey flows through Liverpool and Manchester before eventually reaching the Irish Sea. It holds a significant place in Britain's rich past, and its contribution to the Industrial Revolution was vital. In the 19th century, 40 per cent of the world’s trade passed through Liverpool. However, it suffered from severe pollution in the 20th century. Since the 1980s, concerted efforts have been made to clean up the river and restore its wildlife habitats, resulting in the rejuvenation of the river as a thriving ecosystem that supports a wide variety of species. Liverpool has become an international tourist destination, and the bustling Port of Liverpool ranks among the UK's busiest, while the river's cultural significance is immortalised in countless songs, poems and stories, cementing its place in British history and culture.

My project aims to explore the dynamic flow of the River Mersey, chronicling the river's landscapes, bustling urban centres and the remnants of its industrial past. Through this exploration, I hope to capture the spirit of the Mersey, creating a compelling narrative that reflects the multifaceted beauty and resilience of a waterway that has become a crucial part of the region's identity.
